What is a Gold Nugget?

A gold nugget is a piece of gold produced through mining and extraction.

Where can they be found?

Alaska and California are famous for their gold discoveries.

In the earth, gold nuggets are found mostly near rivers, streams, ancient dried up river channels, and underground riverbeds.

What is the purity of Gold Nuggets? 

Natural gold nuggets are never 100% pure.  Most nuggets are between 85 percent and 95 percent pure gold meaning that it is between 20-23 karat gold.

Natural nuggets can have trace elements of copper, silver, and even quartz.

How big are gold nuggets?

Gold Nuggets come in all different sizes. The smaller ones range from 1mm to 6mm and are often referred to as flakes. Bigger flakes are called nuggets and has been found as large as 2500 ounces although almost all nuggets bugger than 300 ounces were melted. 

How are they weighed?

Gold nuggets typically get weighed by the gram or by the Troy ounce. 

One Troy ounce is equal to approximately 31.1 grams.

The Troy ounce is used when measuring or weighing precious metals.

Gold Nuggets in Alaska:

Alaska produces more gold than any of the other states except for Nevada.

A few of the major commercial mines in Alaska include Fort KnoxKensington Underground Gold Mine, and Pogo Underground Mine.
